Namma Metro has undoubtedly turned into a boon for Bengalureans, but the project’s expansion is increasingly threatening more and more existing structures and open spaces
After Chhota Maidan near Shivajinagar bus stand, another playground (Madina Masjid ground) and a technical training centre for the deaf near Bamboo Bazaar will soon make way for the proposed Cantonment underground Metro station
While residents of the locality are worried about losing another playground, the only open space in the congested neighbourhood, deaf students and staff of Technical Training Centre for the Deaf on Haines Road are staring at an uncertain future. The centre, run by Reachout Education Trust, an NGO, along with the state industrial training & employment department, has about 65 students, including 20 who stay in the hostel
We’ve heard that BMRCL is commencing work in a few weeks, but they have not communicated with us yet. We don’t know where to go with these students. We are already struggling to run the institution. But we don’t have any option as BMRCL wants to demolish our three-storey building for a station,” said a staffer. The centre has been functioning in a BBMP land on lease
Residents staged protest earlier
In fact, many residents including children, had earlier staged a protest to protect the Madina Masjid ground from Metro work. Mohammed Danish, who plays cricket in the ground said: “We regularly play cricket here. Now, BMRCL will start work and we have no idea when the project will be over. They should at least allow us to play in the available space,” he added
People are happy that Metro is coming here as it’ll provide better connectivity to other places, but there are concerns about losing the playground. However, BMRCL officials have assured us that they will acquire only a small portion and restore it after work is over,” said Pulakeshinagar ward corporator Abdul Rakeeb Zakir
First plan junked
As per the earlier plan, the proposed Cantonment Metro station was supposed to come up near Cantonment railway station. However, it was shifted to Bamboo Bazar allegedly after pressure from some apartment complexes in Benson Town
